The Sardar Sarovar Project

The Narmada River is the largest river in Central India as well as in Gujarat. It originates in the highlands of Madhya Pradesh and meets the sea in the Gulf of Cambay. It journeys through 1,312 km across the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, and drains a basin of 98,800 sq. km.

About Sardar Sarovar Project

The Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) is currently one of the biggest irrigation and power projects in the country. It is an inter-state project whose benefits will be shared between the four states of
Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The terminal major dam for the Project is located in Gujarat, near Vadgam. It is a concrete gravity dam with a maximum length of 1210 m and maximum height of 138.68 m.

The SSP dam will be India’s third highest concrete dam. One of the unique aspects of the dam is that it has the lowest ratio of area submerged to area irrigated. While the average ratio for major projects is about 4-5%, SSP has a ratio of only 1.5%. This is because the Narmada flows through deep gorges.

Major Benefits of this Project

  • Irrigation: The Project will provide irrigation facilities to 17.93 lakh ha, in 12 districts of Gujarat.

  • Drinking Water Supply: A special allocation of 1.06 MAF of water has been made to provide drinking water to 135 urban centres and 8215 villages.

  • Power: Two powerhouses including the riverbed powerhouse and a canal head powerhouse with an installed capacity of 1200 MW and 250 MW will be created. The power will be shared by the three states – MP will receive 57%, Maharashtra will get 27% and the remaining 16% will be taken by Gujarat.

  • Flood Protection: Flood protection will be provided to 30,000 ha, covering 210 villages in Bharuch.
